Herbs and their healing effects in Herbal Preparations for Haiti

These are the herbs in the herbal remedies we took – thanks Anna, Karen of Sacred Vibes Apothecary and her little man, Ziggy, Sala, Asif, and all the other beautiful herbalists in NYC, Brooklyn REPRESENT! who contributed to herbal healing for communities in Haiti!

Nightly Knockout

Valerian – sedative, nervine, helps the body calm the nerves, good sleep aid.

Hops – sedative, helps the body relax; nerve tonic, like valerian it is good for insomnia; is high in estrogen (when used fresh) and stimulates milk production.

Oatstraw –  natural tonic for the nervous system.

Reproductive Tonic

Red Raspberry – helps tone and nourishes the uterus muscles, a very important herb for easier childbirth.

Oat Straw – natural tonic for the nervous system.

Nettles – nutritive and nurishing for the pregnant woman, rich in calcium, iron and other minerals and vitamins, and restorative to a woman’s reproductive system after childbirth.

Red Clover – nutritive, alterative or cleans the blood, repairs DNA and has been shown to reverse cancer.

Goddess Tea & Wash  4 reproductive infection

Pau D’Arco – used by the Mayas and the Incas, currently used to treat cancer in Latin America, also aids the liver and the endocrine gland system.

Oatstraw – natural tonic for the nervous system, nutritive, soothing for the digestive system.

Mullein – a demulcent or soothing to the mucuous membranes.

Peppermint – soothing sedative, most pungent of all mints, good for the digestion.

External Would Wash

Plaintain or plantago – the drawing herb, great for the skin to heal wounds and bites.

Comfrey – mucilage, emollient, soothing to the mucuous membranes and to the skin.

Calendula – astringent, great for the skin by promoting cell growth and repair (vulnerary).

Salve

Calendula – astringent, great for the skin by promoting cell grouwth and repair (vulnerary)

Yarrow – a great herb for wounds and bleeding (hemostatic), a tonic for the body, opens the pores by relaxing the skin; not to be used during the early stages of pregnancy.

Frankensense essential oil – heals wounds by promoting cell growth (vulnerary).

Other loose herbs

Comfrey – soothes the membranes, heals tissues; some controversy about ingesting it.

Lemongrass – good for digestion, nutritive.

Chamomile – good for digestive complaints, helps with menstrual pains.

Alfalfa – means “father” in Arabic, is a great restorative tonic, high in minerals, a blood purifier, cooling for fevers and increases mother’s milk.

Anise seeds – useful for digestion and in soothing menstrual pains.

White oak bark (good for douches) – treats diahrrea, dysentery, and bleeding.

Elder berries – anti inflammatory, anti-fever.
