Check out the NY Times article on the blogroll at the right about the legal and illegal extraction of rare earth materials from Southern China.
Like most mining operations, both legal and illegal, they have deadly consequences for the earth, the water and our communities. At what price the addiction to profit, at what price are we willing to create new and more fancy gadgets to progress in our lives at the expense de la Madre Tierra? When will we stop our suicidal behavior? Of course, most of us do not know the secrets of how corporations produce things, but when we find them out, we have to expose them and demand changes. Either way, we know by now that corporations, whose only motive is profit, do not care about us or about La Madre Tierra. But people make up corporations so we can force change.
As other articles demonstrate, China’s reductions on it’s export of these materials, will unleash another trade war as the U.S. and other countries try to catch up by mining their parts of the earth to reap the huge profits.
When will we learn to live together with the earth and with each other? Will we realize that we have ONE RARE EARTH, and that if we continue the non-sustainable extraction processes of so many materials, the U’wa People from Colombia call oil the blood of the Mother, as we have done with oil, gas, coal, diamonds, gold, silver, lumber, etc., that we will soon realize that there is nothing left to live on?
