Magic, Nature, and Science/La Magia, La Naturaleza y La Ciencia

Storm over Brooklyn

When I focus on nature (outside myself, but at the same time, connected), aka, people-in-nature, thanks Jason Moore, I think of how powerful, awe-inspiring it is. I often get that sense of the magic that it signifies, and although there is magic in science, often times, scientific explanations leave me cold and only tell part of the story.

For instance, look at the picture above.  The camera did catch this small part of nature well, though you can’t really see the movement, and parts of it moved quickly, blurring the top of it, and the sides expanding out and moving. So, in this example, we (Mildred, Ujju, Scott, Sigrid, Marcelino, Ayisha and I) observed the power of nature as real, observable, and moving.  But if one were to just describe it as cumulonimbus, or thunderstorm cloud, thanks National Weather Service, that is not enough of a description for me.

I’m not opposing science to magic, good science will show it, but I am opposed to how some scientists (Francis Bacon as the epitome as told by Carolyn Merchant, or racist science, or the so-called science that denies human effects on climate change) have imposed a narrow view of nature via analytical science, where humans dominate it in a sexist and misogynist less than analogous sense, as if we were not part of each other.

I’m appreciative of Jason Moore’s book, Capitalism in the Web of Life  Ecology and the Accumulation of Capital as a way to get out of looking at nature as object, separate from people and that crazy unuseful binary we got from the dominant European colonizing genocidal way of thinking.

Y la magia de las semillas/Waiting, waiting, there it is!
